Fascinating!
I am no stranger to antique shops and kitschy boutiques, especially the ones that feature vintage jewelry, handbags, gloves, and accessories. I’ve noticed that the “fascinator” is starting to make a fashion comeback, at least stateside; on the other side of the pond, hats and hair decorations have been the standard for fancy dress since forever and ever.
Basically it’s a piece of millinery, larger than a barrette, and smaller than a hat, featuring flowers, rhinestones, and feathers. Sometimes they have a veil or piece of tulle, and they look hot hot hot with some chic red lipstick : ) You might remember old photos of your grandmother (or great grandmother) wearing something like it when she was dressed up, or movie stars who used to rock the look in the 40′s and 50′s.
If you look up “fascinator” on etsy you’ll find loads of designers selling them for upwards of fifty bucks, or more, depending on detail and craftsmanship. I wanted one of my own, but i was having none of that. So i did a quick run to the craft store to get some basic supplies, and then dug around in my stash to see what else I might add. Here’s the result:

Ok, I admit; I was a little overzealous with the hot glue gun with this one, but it still looked pretty fabulous when I wore it to a wedding we attended last weekend. A lot of the older women there cooed about how they remembered their aunties and mothers having them once upon a time, which was super fun to hear.
I think I’ll be making more of these and possibly selling them in my shop. What colors do you all like?

why yes you do look fab quite so i’d be willing to say marvelous:) really think overzealous is not correct ,just enough i personally think. with red she draws admirers to delightful head. blue is good but really wise and crafty as you are, you will no doubt know best!!!! really i don’t know how to kid:) p.s. i do remember these i’m so dating me:( thanks for the pic its a keeper ha!) peas j.s.
ah-hah! i never knew what a “fascinator” was, though i’ve read about them in novels. yours is lovely, and i say go for it!
I like natural colors, but then those probably don’t go well with such an item. I’m not a fan of orange though, but I suppose if it went with that was worn, it’d be fine. So, really, probably a good assortment of colors so you have a better chance of matching the needs of someone. I’m so not helpful.
That is gorgeous! I often wear a tignon to church or formal events, since they are part of my heritage, but I’d love to wear something like that, or possibly even attach it to the tignon itself.
Waggi Wagga, HB5 is coming soon to a computer near you! And by soon I mean a month or two:(
Your friend,

i want one EXACTLY like that–how much do you think you’ll charge?
thank god you defined this; if asked, i would’ve figured a “fascinator” was something like a “shocker.”
wouldn’t i have been so embarrassed at parties.
this is GORGEOUS. i’m glad the 60′s are back in force now. thx madmen, the glamour lovers salute you!
I love it!!
I really, really love that. Colors? Who cares? I’d plan an outfit around the accessory.
@jstickmann - Thanks! i love your comments. I have a bunch of firey red flowers, so i think i might make a red one, too.
@allthingsbarbara - merci beaucoup!
@Fleener - I think natural, subtle colors can be really appealing, sometimes more so than the over the top stuff. Like in the one up there, it’s got turquoise and purple, but also a lot of olives and browns to tone it down. So i think you’re probably right on target.
@Todd - Schnerkit! Thanks for the heads up, that is so exciting! Everybody go check out honkbarn.com, it’s so awesome and silly!
@MlleRobillard - Your comment just lead to ten minutes of googling about tignons and madras. Apparently we have taught one another something! And i think it would look amazing pinned to a tignon, apparently that’s what the glamorous ladies of New Orleans used to do.
@RizzlGrizzl - I’m not really sure, they’ll probably end up in line with what other people are charging, especially since i tend to add a lot of details. I’m also thinking I’ll make some smaller “everyday” ones and see how that flies.
@CrapeDiem - You should totally wear a shocker on your head.
Also, i love how firefox flags “shocker” for spell-checking, nyah.
@Giraffney- thanks!
@eFairy - I think you have the right idea, haha.
Beautiful.
