Art Day!
12:30 PM
What’s this?? An empty easel??!
What a rip off.
Matilda the Guinea Pig says, “I found some canvases under here, mummy! you can paint on these!”
Ugmoe the Rabbit agrees.
But I don’t really feel like painting today. And look at my worktable! it’s a friggin’ disaster!
Well, i mean, a CREATIVE disaster. But I need somewhere to work just the same.
That’s better.

I think I’ll do a drawing today. Get back to basics; just me, a sharpie marker, and an unwitting sheet of paper. Who knows what will become of us?? Only the next couple hours will tell……
12:45 PM Ok, i found the paper I like.

It’s pretty much just 5×8″ unlined index cards, but it’s a nice bright white, fairly smooth, a decent precut size, and, oh, CHEAP AS HELL.
Because i screw these drawings up more than you would believe (which you might very well witness today), and since i pretty much make everything up on the fly, i would probably go broke or drop dead from sharpie fumes if I were using fancier paper. It’s still art though.
Behold: my badass twin-tip sharpie marker! and so artfully photographed!
I am unstoppable.First things first: draw a border with the fat end of the sharpie. I kind of eyeball it to be around 5×7 inches, since 5×8 (the size of the card) is kind of useless. And i don’t use a ruler, because that would be cheating, and i like my lines to look kind of screwy.
Now comes the tough part….. what to draw??
1:00 PM Think think think think…..1:15 PM
Kay, let’s start with some heads.
And then things begin to make more sense….
This is one of those moments where i have to stop and do some complex thinking. I rarely plan out a drawing ahead of time, so I have to consider how I’m going to draw the pose. And because i can’t erase, if i screw this shit up then i have to start all over. Not a huge loss at this point, but still sucky.
Sometimes this involves some gesturing or flailing around to get it just right. Meet my imaginary bunny rabbit, everyone!
Since i have been known to work on these drawings in public- say, the subway or in a cafe- I have occasionally gotten strange looks from people because i was pretending to have mermaid fins or an invisible squirrel on my shoulder.
1:45 PMOk, i think i got the hands right. Or at least good enough!
So then i gave the girl some long, straight hair.
Added some details to the eyes…..

2:00 PM
I have this idea to draw a moon in the sky, but i don’t feel like drawing a circle. i mean, I CAN draw a pretty perfect looking circle, but i’m a lazy mofo.
So i’m cheating, with whatever is kicking around on the messy table.
This will do.
The rabbit gazes at the new moon in the paper sky.
I added a few touches to the girl’s gaze, as well.
And some more rabbity details.
2:15 PM Now i have to figure out what to add next.Maybe i’ll just spraypaint it instead!!
har har, just kidding. I think the sharpie fumes are getting to me.
(By the way, don’t try that at home, especially with a fresh sharpie. In the time it took to snap a picture, i was definitely feeling woozly.)
Ugmoe decided to get in on the action. “Oh hai,” he says, “what are you drawin’?”
And when i showed him, he made this goofy face.
I guess everybuns a critic.
Badump-ching!
2:45 PM Just finished drawing some bold outlines:And then I drew an “aura”, i guess you would call it.
I dunno really why i do this.
Actually, i do, and it is for a couple reasons: it sort of flattens out & separates the main figures, which I like, and contrasts them with the background.
The other reason is a little more esoteric. When i was *ahem* “studying” street art, one of the basic elements of almost every piece is the “force field”. It kinda serves a practical aesthetic purpose, but also has these pseudo-mystical connotations; in a way it’s meant to protect the finished painting.
So I’ve always liked to include that, even though i can hear my old illustration professors huffing and sneering about it.
3:00 PM
coloring in the background:A thoroughly markerfied sky.
Girl, why don’t you smile more?
That’s better.
Rendering some patches of rabbit fur:
And then a couple of details, like a locket for the bunny to wear.
And there we have it, all finished!
As always, thanks for hanging out with me while i draw, guys.

I wanna see your bunny!
Are you going to paint the easel?
Or….perhaps put a canvas up?
Or….skip art day?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
@PoetMcChick - SKIP ART DAY?? Are you insane?! I’ll get lynched!
@relaxolgy - I’m sure you will. For some reason he and the guinea pig have been all up in my business today.
baha but your babies you can put back in their cages
so get started already, it’s already after 12 there.
Ha Ha. Look at Ugmoe’s little mouth. He’s been eating paper, I can tell.
That’s right, clean the table! Your stuff is cluttering up MY side!
@RuthlessToothless - Guess what? I’m drawing on YOUR side. and there is nuthin’ you can do about it, hah!
Matilda’s such a cutie! I really liked your Indian woman from a few weeks ago. Do you draw other animals? Like an elephant or iguana?
Draw Godzilla. And lots of lightning bolts! And stuff blowing up!
Draw me the way Jack drew Rose in Titanic!
@BoureeMusique - Thanks! and yes: as i used to tell my young art students, I can pretty much draw ANYTHING.
Except for Sam, who is an incredibly strange creature. It would be impossible to capture his true essence, so my skillz fall short in that department.
@moontree_studios - i guess my true character could never be fully grasped on paper.
Draw a sad guy taking his bunny to the vet because it has rabies and is frothing at the mouth. And bit the guy so he’s frothing at the mouth too.
@Fleener - More froth! gotcha.
draw someone taking fleener to the vet.
ohhh too late, you’ve already started something else.
@CrapeDiem - i will have to remember that one for later. I could put one of those paper cone collars around his neck, bahaha.
i’m late for art day! fuck!
OK, what is with that face Ugmoe is making? I’ve never seen that contorted mouth thing before. I think he’s hamming it up for the camera!
Also, will this girl have clothes or is she going to be totally naked holding a bunny?
Your bunny’s expression cracks me up. What a harsh critic.
As for the bunny on paper, that’s one big bunny! I love that she’s looking at the moon.
@RuthlessToothless - I know! I think I caught him in the middle of licking his lips, but the face he made is hilarious. And yes, naked.
@DeliaD - yep, it is definitely a big bunny. Believe it or not, my rabbit is roughly the same size….. around 10 lbs. People mistake him for a dog sometimes.
10 lbs? That IS a big bunny.
I love the darkness of the finished product. I also like that the girl is naked but the rabbit wears a locket.
Thanks for another fun Monday!
that is awesome! powerful.
I loved seeing the project from start to finish!
I think I know that girl!
very cool! thank you
also, I can’t draw like that with pen, yikes. I am impressed. I draw with paint, but that’s okay because I can cover it up when I screw it up.
bahaa collar. please, please, for the love of all that’s holy, do that.
wonderful progression, as always. art monday is becoming my favorite day of the week.
I have been enjoying your ongoing art series. With the first two paintings, I would like the simple beginnings and think “stop. it’s perfect.”, but then you’d add something and I would REALLY like the piece even more. Anyhow, it’s awesome to see the progression.
This whole thing is a really great idea. No offense to Xanga, but I think that this could be a very successful (and potentially more profitable) venture to do on a mainstream blog (with your own url, utilizing something like Typepad). I don’t know if you get the gist of what I’m saying; I just see how this could be even *bigger*. I think that you would find sponsors and an even wider audience for your blog and consumers for your art.
Sorry to babble.
You could probably draw with your toes better than I could with my talent.
@soNOTcool - Thank you! I know what you mean about stopping…. which is kind of why i wanted to document all the fun in-between parts.
And I totally agree with the blog idea. Once upon a time you could actually register your own URL on Xanga, but it seems like that’s not possible anymore. Which is LAME, because just about every other blog allows this. I actually really like the xanga content management interface, and that’s pretty much the only thing keeping me here.
For now, when you go to http://www.moontreestudios.com and click on “blog”, it brings you here.
Are you in fact, producing art about art?
Meta-art!
@moritheil - i think you may be right!
Shit, does that qualify me as one of those obnoxious “performance artists”?
@Fleener - Hah! we should put that one to the test some day. I double dog dare you.
Art days with you are always great fun!
@moontree_studios - Hmm, perhaps, but it’s okay! I’ll be pretentious with you! (I am holding a contest about contests . . . )
Ugmoe is unbelievably cute. Can you housetrain rabbits or does he poo everywhere?
I use to draw on the fly but now all I can do is move a mouse.
lovely.
you really crack me up such antics ugmoe is a hard critic.thanks for mondays.remember sharpies only in moderation
..peace..
@SavonDuJour - Yep, he’s completely housetrained, and only uses his litter box. Comes when called, sleeps under our bed, and is generally very clever (and opinionated).
i looooooove watching you work. seriously. i could be a fly on your wall anyday!
Wow… that’s a long process… And I do like the rabbit
I love Mondays now. Thank you, cuteness.
Lovely lovely…and I’m definitely glad you didn’t ditch Art Day…one thing I so look forward to…
I got a 24 pack of Sharpies for my birfday.
You have inspirated me to try the Sharpie thing myself.
You crack me up!! I enjoy your step by——drawings with the commentary. You have a great sense of humor as well as talent with the ‘sharpies’ Keep up the great work and keep on having fun!
Wonderful drawing! You’re a great artist..
beeeeeeyoot! and I love pics of you– you look gorgeous. I love the new hair.
